Implicit Obstacle Detection Using Kinect

Robotics is gaining tremendous momentum as the years pass by. Giants such as Google, Tesla and now Uber are coming up with self-driving cars. With technology advancing to such heights, this area of robotics is being tapped into by researchers and educational institutions worldwide. The robots that are used for this project are designed for the students at Rochester Institute of Technology to learn and code on the robots. These robots move around in Golisano College of Computing Sciences by scanning the QR code that have been placed throughout the third floor of the building. The robots have an XBOX Kinect connected to it which scans for the obstacles while moving around. The obstacles that are less than a meter away cannot be detected in case the robot makes a turn suddenly. This project deals with developing an algorithm to detect the obstacles within a meter and avoid those obstacles successfully using the Kinect.
